Workshop Description:

Atelier Drawing
The great French Academies of art persisted for a few hundred years and their proponents are

often overshadowed by the Impressionists and other movements. However strict, these Academies produced some of the finest painters and draftsmen that have ever existed. These schools looked to the classical Greek and Roman art, and devised a systematic and organized training method for their students. Almost forgotten and greatly overlooked in most art history texts, recent re-publications and organizations have brought this way of teaching and practicing art back to life, and into the public eye.

In this class, students will begin by learning the basic fundamentals, and later move on towards increasingly complex compositions. Per the Atelier tradition, we will begin by discussing the so-called “Bargue plates” what they are, and how to use them. Next we will move onto drawing from a plaster cast and finally from a live model, specifically utilizing the techniques from the Bargue course, as well as many others. The course will include lecture, demo, group and individual instruction. The goal is to learn how to tackle some of the more complicated aspects of drawing in a simplistic, streamlined manner. We will also discuss materials in-depth, to gain a more technical mastery of drawing media. Beginner through advanced students are welcome.

Brenda Lyness has won Best in Show at the at the Barnes and Noble Winter Show of the PAA (Penfield Art Association).  The title,  “The Erosion of Faith, Hope, and Charity” (mixed media) featured the faces of three women with a veil of transparent, dripping charcoal over their faces, as if, Faith, Hope and Charity were eroding. Brenda was inspired to create this piece when she was moved by the 2017 turmoil in our country, and personally experienced the erosion of basic kindness and respect in our culture.
