“Plein air season is almost here, my friends... I hope to see you out there!”

As a newbie plein air painter, I chose oil paint as my preferred medium for one simple reason: the built-in excuse that comes from never having used it before. For me, oils seemed like the “least bad” option for taking the studio out into the wild and unpredictable great outdoors for my first time.

All those years ago and I can still recall the entire session. My very first attempt at oil painting on location was just one disaster after another all afternoon long. But just 12.7 minutes into it, I was hooked! I’ve been on a decades-long plein air painting adventure ever since. Today I’m an active member of the Genesee Valley (GVPAP), Greater

Rochester (GRPAP), and Off-Color Painters (OCP) plein air painting groups and participate in several plein air events and competitions throughout the year. I’ve been lucky enough to be juried into, and won awards at several shows and events. I have also been rejected from many others.

I’m enjoying the opportunity to share what I do with artists and art clubs around the region through demos, classes and speaking engagements. As a self-taught artist, it feels good to be in a position to give a little back.
