October 13-16, 2016

Garrapata in Spring The_Colors_of_Mount_Black

Workshop Description:   Students may work in either Pastel or Oil

Max # of students will be 16

Enjoy the beauty and challenge of painting in the field, and then learn how plein air painting can be used as a reference for larger studio pieces. We’ll spend two days working in the field, with emphasis on simplification, fresh color, accurate drawing, dynamic composition, and finding “the story” in the complexity of nature.

Back in the studio we’ll analyze the plein air work, individually and as a group, and I’ll introduce you to charcoal drawing as a direct and effective means to plan studio pastels. Finally, with the aid of a plein air study, a charcoal preparatory drawing, sketches, and perhaps a few photos, you’ll be able start a studio painting with confidence.

This class will include demonstrations in the field and studio, friendly critiques, and plenty of one-on-one time.

NOTE: While the purpose of the workshop is to equip students to execute studio paintings from plein air studies, I don’t expect students to finish their studio paintings in the allotted time. Studio time will be more focused on introducing helpful tools to use in approaching a studio painting. We will use the planning process to take an in depth look at composition, color, value, and when and how to make changes that both enhance the idea and make it more personal. So, I am more focused on equipping students to create better studio paintings on their own than I am in having them leave with a finished studio painting.
